Robert Hayes

Biography

Robert Hayes grew up speaking two languages and spent years watching family members and friends struggle through English vocabulary resources that assumed far more background knowledge than they had. Too often, looking up an unfamiliar word sent them to a definition that contained three more words they did not know. That cycle of frustration became the problem he set out to solve.

After completing his education degree, Robert spent several years teaching English in community education settings, adult learning programmes, and language schools — always working with learners who were starting from scratch or rebuilding confidence after difficult early experiences with formal language education.

He specialises in vocabulary acquisition for learners at the A1 to B2 level, with a focus on making word learning feel accessible and practical rather than overwhelming. Robert believes that the most powerful vocabulary teaching happens when learners encounter words in real, meaningful sentences — not in isolated lists.

SynonymLabz grew from a simple set of vocabulary handouts Robert created for his students, expanded into a full reference resource for English learners everywhere. Every page reflects his core teaching principle: if the explanation needs explaining, it is not simple enough yet.

Robert holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a CELTA qualification. He continues to work with ESL learners while developing new content for SynonymLabz.
